Linux/Unix System Administration
This course seeks to provide the necessary skills to participants to enable them work effectively in a Linux environment. It also effectively prepares a student for the LPI Exam Certification (www.lpi.org ). It will provide relevant Linux/Unix system administration and network administration skills to participants to enable them manage UNIX based systems operating environments.

Course Prerequisites


This course requires previous computer knowledge, but not necessarily in Linux. Programmers, novice System Administrators, and new users of Linux looking for comprehensive Linux /Unix instruction Users who need to know Linux for efficient operation of a UNIX-based application will benefit from this course.

By the end of the course the participant will have learned how to:


  1. Install and manage Linux Packages
  2. Configure various hardware for use in Linux
  3. Effectively use the Linux Command Line Interface
  4. Perform basic file management and editing operations
  5. Manage and monitor running processes
  6. Implement a Linux File System and the File System Hierarchy Standard
  7. Perform basic system administration functions like user management and backups.
  8. Manage the Linux Graphical Interface including the X Environment and the Windows Managers like KDE and GNOME.
  9. Install and make own custom kernels
  10. Configure and install various Linux Servers including web servers (APACHE), DNS Servers (BIND), File Servers (SAMBA), DHCP Servers, Internet Proxies (SQUID), Email Gateways (Postfix/ sendmail with spamfilters and antivirus filtering)
  11. Secure Linux Systems ( Hardening, SSH and Encryption)
  12. Managing Linux Networks Services
  13. Use Linux to implement firewalls and to perform routing.
  14. Write BASH Scripts and Shell Programming
